Ni hay decano unanimidad cuando se hace un intento por explicar por qué algunas iglesias se hallan sin presbíteros, otras sin obispos, otras donde las cabezas de la comunidad se llaman a veces obispos, a veces presbíteros. Este desacuerdo aumenta cuando surge la pregunta sobre la interpretación de los términos que designan a otros personajes que ejercen cierta autoridad fija en las comunidades cristianas primitivas.
